In this one-off session, the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee will be examining the Government’s new emergency alerts system, in which messages may be broadcast to mobile phones to warn of a nearby danger to life. The system went live in March this year and underwent a nationwide test in April. The session will be focused on understanding important details of the emergency alerts system, including the criteria for issuing alerts, plans for ensuring people know how to respond to an alert, and learning from the national test in April in which numerous mobile phone users did not receive a test alert as scheduled.
