The government's response

This document responds to First Report - Assessing DFID’s results in nutrition Review: report from the Sub-Committee on the Work of ICAI.

This is the government's response, published 22 October 2021.

Summary written by Accountability Index from the government's response. It is not the government's own words.

The government welcomes the Committee's recognition that UK nutrition programmes are delivering against objectives, agrees that more is needed on data gathering and on food quality, and sets out guidance and updates in progress.

  • On data, it agrees more needs to be done and is "currently developing guidance and tools" for monitoring and evaluation of nutrition programmes. It will provide an update on ICAI's data recommendation by 31 October.
  • On food quality, it agrees on "the importance of quality of food and dietary diversity". FCDO guidance on improving diets through agriculture and food systems is "due to be finalised by the end of 2021".
  • On the private sector, FCDO is developing internal guidance drawing on lessons learned from cooperation with the private sector, which is "expected to set out how to monitor and apply lessons learned in future programming".
  • On nutrition spending in 2021-22, it does not give a figure. It cites a temporary reduction in the aid budget from 0.7% to 0.5% of national income, and says final 2021 UK ODA spend will be published in 2022.
