The government says it has been able, "in spirit and principle", to accept all ten recommendations of the Committee's report on Brexit and local government.

  • On engagement and no deal planning, the government accepts the recommendations and commits to "ensuring appropriate mechanisms are in place throughout the implementation period and negotiations on a future relationship".
  • On the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, it agrees "in principle" to consult, says it "will consult widely", and says final decisions are due following the Spending Review.
  • On devolution, it accepts the recommendation "with the caveat" that it will provide clarity "as soon as practicable"; it says it would not be right to commit to a one-month deadline and is "not persuaded" a further English Devolution Bill is necessary.
  • On new burdens, it is "committed, through the established New Burdens Doctrine", to funding local government in England "in full, should a new burden be identified and assessed".
