Inquiry scope
In 2021, the Committee’s report In the room: the UK’s role in multilateral diplomacy concluded that autocratic states were attempting to aggressively co-opt strategically important multilateral organisations and to fundamentally redefine their founding principles. Since that time, major world events have led to further questioning of the institutions themselves and the extent to which they are seen to be legitimate and relevant. This questioning has intensified with the geopolitical challenge of increasing systemic competition. 2024 will see key elections around the world as well as significant challenges around conflict and climate change. Our inquiry, which follows on from our initial inquiry into multilaterals , looks at how a broad range of countries are using multilateral organisations, be that through engaging and influencing, working around them or obstruction. The Committee is accepting written evidence until 26 February 2024. The committee is interested in specific examples and has a particular interest in these countries: Brazil, China, France, India, Turkey, South Africa, Nigeria, Mexico, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Russia, United States, and Indonesia.
