Recent coups in West Africa and the Sahel region
Status: Closed
Opened: 11 Sep 2023
Closed: 26 Apr 2024
Inquiry scope
In the last three years, there have been six successful coups in West Africa, with further coups experienced across the Sahel. The recent spate of coups raises questions over why the military has intervened politically so many times and begs whether further political unrest across the region is likely. The session seeks to assess the implications of the changing political and security environment on the UK-Africa relationship.Oral evidence sessions
