The situation in Belarus and the FCDO's response
Status: Closed
Opened: 8 Jun 2021
Closed: 26 Apr 2024
Inquiry scope
Since August 2020 Belarus has experienced a disputed election that has led to unprecedented public protest. The response of the Lukashenka regime has been mass detention of protesters and repression of the media. There have been multiple allegations of human rights abuse. In the last month a Ryanair flight was re-directed to Minsk culminating in the arrest of a prominent journalist and his partner. The FAC is holding a one-off evidence session into the current situation in Belarus with the intention of making recommendations to the FCDO of further action.Oral evidence sessions
