Select committee: Environmental Audit Committee

Conclusion 23

Second Report - Environmental change and food security Published 8 Dec 2023 Paragraph 142
Conclusion (the committee's words)
The Minister committed to a publication timetable for the Land Use Framework of this year. We expect the framework to be published no later than the last sitting day in December of 2023 and we expect the framework to balance competing demands on UK land and to integrate fully food security as a central principle. The framework must set out how land will produce food in a way that supports the resilience of our food system while adapting to and mitigating climate change and biodiversity loss. Where feasible, land should be shared to help meet multiple objectives including food production, carbon sequestration, restoring nature, and growing energy crops. The framework must show evidence of having been co-produced with those who are affected by it. Finally, it must also evidence how productivity within existing uses can be improved without negative environmental impacts.
