Select Committee · Environmental Audit Committee
Technological Innovations and Climate Change: Green Steel
Status: Closed
Opened: 3 Feb 2022
Closed: 21 Jun 2023
Inquiry scope
The next subject to be examined in the Environmental Audit Committee’s work on Technological innovations and climate change will be Green steel . Steel is the foundation for many of the UK’s low-carbon aspirations, from electricity generation to modes of transport. But wind turbines and electric vehicles have a major carbon footprint due to the steel used to manufacture them. As the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee has recently pointed out , the decision point for investment to renew the UK’s steel installations is fast approaching, without a clear lead from the Government on the technology to adopt. The Committee will be exploring the technological innovations available to make the steel sector more environmentally friendly.
